AUDIOLOGY & SPEECH THERAPY

Audiology deals with identifying and evaluating hearing disorders associated with adults, children, or infants. The Audiology Department at PIMS offers diagnostic evaluations to people having hearing difficulties.

Audiology combines medical science with the best available technology to develop concrete solutions to hearing or balance disorders. People who practice audiology are called audiologists, and Audiologists are accountable for managing and recuperation disorders linked to hearing and balance. Here audiologists work with speech and language therapists and ENT doctors to provide comprehensive services for people with hearing disorders. The Speech Therapy department assesses, diagnoses and treats children and adults having difficulty with speech, language and swallowing.

Our panel of speech therapists include specialists who have proven excellence and experience in stroke rehabilitation, neuro-rehabilitation, swallowing difficulties and neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and voice disorders.

Diagnostic Services

Clinical Mycology

  • Clinical Mycology is a specialized branch of medical microbiology focused on the detection, identification, and management of fungal infections in humans. These infections can range from superficial skin conditions to life-threatening systemic diseases, particularly in immunocompromised patients. The Clinical Mycology service plays a crucial role in diagnosing fungal infections accurately and guiding appropriate antifungal therapy.

    Key Functions of Clinical Mycology:
    1. Detection and Identification of Fungal Pathogens
      • Isolates and identifies yeasts (e.g., Candida) and moulds (e.g., Aspergillus, Histoplasma, Cryptococcus) from clinical specimens such as blood, sputum, skin scrapings, nails, and tissue biopsies.
      • Differentiates between colonization, contamination, and true infection.
    2. Antifungal Susceptibility Testing
      • Determines the susceptibility of fungal isolates to various antifungal agents.
      • Assists clinicians in selecting the most effective treatment, particularly in cases of resistant or recurrent infections.
    3. Support for High-Risk Patients
      • Provides diagnostic support for immunocompromised individuals (e.g., cancer patients, transplant recipients, HIV-positive individuals) who are at higher risk of invasive fungal infections.
      • Plays a role in early detection, which is vital for improving outcomes in these patients.
    4. Specialist Consultation and Surveillance
      • Offers expert interpretation of results and guidance on the clinical relevance of fungal findings.
      • Supports infection control and public health surveillance for outbreaks or emerging fungal threats.
